The cutting edge of Christian affairs

“Let me make one thing perfectly clear, I AM the President!!”  So, emphatically pronounced the 37th Chief Executive of these United States, Richard Nixon. Despite that man’s reputation, what he affirmed echoes the exact sentiments of the LORD and Ruler of the universe. For, God himself says innumerable times throughout scripture and Biblical history, that what He wants the whole human race to understand without any doubt, uncertainty, or ambiguity, is that He is the One in charge. “God rules, overrules, and super-rules,” my grandfather used to say. That one point is God’s signature affirmation, and His preeminent exclamation point over all world and human affairs. And, everything I hear, and see, and witness from the church, tells me that we really STILL DON’T believe it, perhaps because we just don’t understand why.

But, just listen briefly to these few pronouncements by the Lord about his sovereignty over this world. Let’s let God’s Word speak for him.

Revelation 19:6

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Hallelujah: for the Lord God OMNIPOTENT reigneth.

Deuteronomy 32:39-40

39 See now that I, even I, am He, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. 40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I LIVE FOREVER.

Isaiah 45:5-7

5 I AM the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me… 6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I AM the Lord, and there is none else. 7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord DO ALL THESE THINGS.

Beloved, these verses are at the heart of my own “2-Minute Testimony.” If you don’t get this one precept — God is SOVEREIGN — you will never, ever be able to fathom, appreciate, nor even believe what God has done in my life. Listen; the short version of my testimony is this:

“I am a living witness,” like the old saints used to say, that ‘God IS God. And, He is God all by himself.’ It is He who stands behind all the scenes of life — commanding, controlling, orchestrating, resolving, and directing ALL things for his glory and for our good. Like my grandparents used to say, so I have found that God will be “a doctor in a sickroom, and a lawyer in a courtroom,” and “He WILL make your enemies your footstool” (Luke 20:43).

The insight that I want to leave with you all today, is this: “God ain’t got no competition!  He is in a league all by himself. Everything is moving by his power — every creature, every deed, and every happening in this world.” So please understand, though the devil be very real and very wicked, he is never your problem. Our problem — yours, mine, and everybody’s — is THE MESS IN OUR HEARTS. When that is taken care of, then we won’t have a problem at all. Like the apostle Paul told the Corinthians, “You have not been troubled by us, but the trouble arises out of your own conflicted hearts” (2Cor 6:12, JED). This word is true for all Christians of all ages
.

Our one and only problem comes from within, from the sinfulness and waywardness of our own tainted hearts.
So, the devil is just a boogeyman to children of God. We don’t live in a divided universe — with God on the one throne and the Devil on the other. God only uses the devil too from time to time. He’s only one of God’s servants. He’s a wicked servant, but he’s still only a servant of the One Almighty God. And, God uses him whenever and however he pleases to help us and to assist us in dealing with this evil in our hearts. Satan then, is like an old-style military Drill Sergeant. His job in our lives is to move us along the path of spiritual growth and develpment, until we become mature, wise, trained servants and warriors for Jesus Christ. And, like in the life and trials of Job, God tells Satan what he can and cannot do to us in the process. So, the story of our lives, where trials  are concerned, is not to try to pin the blame on anyone, but to correctly respond to God, who is in charge of every detail of our lives. Amen.

I leave you with this meditation — one of the most definitive passages in the Bible for New Testament believers. Jesus is no different from his Father, where judgment is concerned.

Revelation 2:18-23

18 “These things says [Jesus] the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire… 20 I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants… 21 And I gave her time to repent… and she did not repent. 22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds. 23 I WILL KILL HER CHILDREN WITH DEATH, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.
